Kohl's inventory tracker

Kohl's runs the steepest seasonal cycle in this set: inventory routinely falls by around 30 percent in the January quarter and rebuilds through the autumn. It has also trended structurally lower, from $4.87 billion at the 2022 peak to under $3 billion.

Inventory, in millions of U.S. dollars, at each fiscal quarter end.

Reading the series

Because the seasonal swing is so large, raw quarter-over-quarter declines at Kohl's look dramatic in every year. The structural story in this series is the downward drift of the peaks, which reflects a smaller inventory position overall rather than faster clearing.

The comparison across five retailers is in who cleared the 2022 glut, and the sector sequence is in the glut timeline.
